Sanctuary State Laws in Connecticut Result in the Death of a Child

Two-Year-Old Liam Rivera Would Be Alive Today if Connecticut Reported an Illegal to ICE

January 29, 2026

The liberal media are portraying the protesters against ICE (United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement) as heroes while depicting ICE officers as Nazis and thugs. But who are the media and the protestors protecting?

They are protecting the likes of Ismalej-Gomez, an illegal from Guatemala who was living in Stamford, Connecticut, when he broke the arm of his six-month-old son, Liam Rivera. He was arrested and served sixty days of a five-year sentence with the requirement that he attend “parenting classes.”

Apparently, he was not a particularly stellar student because two years later, he smashed in the head of his two-year son, killing him, and stashed his body in a plastic bag.

In most other states, Ismalej-Gomez would have been turned over to ICE after breaking his son’s arm and then deported.

But Connecticut prohibits this. In 2019, the Democrats passed and Democratic Governor Ned Lamont signed The Trust Act which:

Prohibit law enforcement officers from giving federal immigration authority access to interview an individual in custody unless:

(i) the individual has been convicted of a class A or B felony.

(ii) the individual is identified as a possible match in the federal Terrorist Screening

Since breaking a six-months-old arm is not a particularly heinous crime in Connecticut, especially if you are an illegal immigrant, Ismalej-Gomez was let loose. And now his son is dead.

The silence to Liam Rivera’s death was deafening. There were no expressions of sympathy from Governor Lamont, Senators Murphy and Blumenthal or Congressman Jim Himes.

The poor child was just another expendable to the liberals who supported the Biden administration’s policy of allowing the invasion of illegals into our country.

In fact, Connecticut expanded the Trust Law in 2025 allowing illegals to sue if they are detained by ICE in violation of the initial Trust Law. Only in Connecticut would Ismalej-Gomez have the right to sue if an attempt was made to deport him after he broke his six-month-old son’s arm.

But Connecticut liberals are still not satisfied. Many recently protested against ICE in Bridgeport, Greenwich, New Haven and Hartford. Senator Blumenthal compared ICE to Nazis. Congressman Himes in a press release stated, “I will not facilitate the lawlessness of an agency [ICE] that is murdering young mothers, threatening peaceful protestors with assault rifles, and kidnapping elderly Americans out of their homes. “

Perhaps these people have a legitimate point. The death of protestors Renee Good and Alex Pretti were tragic and possibly unnecessary. But Ms. Good was using her car to prevent ICE officials from doing their job and refused orders to get out of the car. Mr. Pretti was filming and berating ICE officials while having a loaded and visible Sig Sauer P320 9mm gun in his waist band. ICE workers and police sometimes have their lives flash before them and make split-second decisions that are second guessed by people whose idea of confrontation is arguing with their spouse whether to go the Cayman Islands or St. Bart’s for vacation.

Furthermore, Liam Rivera’s crime was simply existing in the wrong environment. Why aren’t the liberals outraged by his death? Why aren’t they protesting the sexual assault and murder of Laken Riley by an illegal immigrant? Or Rachel Morin, who was raped and murdered by an illegal while hiking? And on and on.

Liberals believe that no one is above the law except for illegal immigrants. They believe that America is a racist and bigoted country who is a force of evil in the world. And if a few Americans are killed by illegals, we are getting what we deserve. Thus, in their view, for the Liam Riveras of the world: Who cares!
