  • There Is No Evidence that Trump’s Presidency Is Damaging the Country’s Health Dr. Selinger needs some hard data to make this statement Joseph Bentivegna Apr 28, 2025 April 28, 2025 In a recent article in the CTMirror, Dr. Howard Selinger, the Chairman of the Family Medicine Department at the Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, stated: “Donald Trump’s executive orders and election have removed the sense of stability and security that many, but not all Americans had become accustomed to — much in the same way that a child relies on the safety provided by his or her parents in a home that feels safe and secure.” He postulates that the stress generated by President Trump’s policies can trigger “flare-ups of underlying pre-existing conditions such as heart disease, emphysema, diabetes… and anxiety and depression.” Yet, Dr. Selinger does not present a scintilla of objective evidence, such as a randomized prospective study, that this is the case. He states that 200,000 people in the federal work force “will have their jobs terminated” and adds “This federal behavior will inevitably harm our most vulnerable citizens.” Federal workers average six-figure salaries along with outstanding health care and defined benefit pensions that are indexed to inflation. They are not “our most vulnerable citizens” by any stretch of the imagination. He states that “[Trump’s] threatened defunding” will handicap the “CDC’s (Center for Disease Control) ability to prepare for future pandemics.” But he fails to mention that the CDC’s draconian policies during the COVID pandemic – based on dubious science – resulted in business closures, increased domestic violence, gun violence, substance abuse and suicide. School closures decimated education, especially that of our poorest citizens. Many children developed speech impediments due to ill-advised mask mandates. The CDC’s incompetence was so blatant that President Biden had to issue a preemptive pardon to the architect of this disaster, Dr. Anthony Fauci, to prevent his being charged with perjury for his many misstatements. This was a factor in President Trump’s election victory, and it is not unrealistic for the CDC to take a financial haircut for the unnecessary carnage it choreographed. He states: “Attacking diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and gender affirming care is blatantly unethical and anti-democratic.” This is subject to reasonable debate. DEI is the belief that the workforce of a given profession should mirror the racial percentages of the general population. But this simply is not the case. Otherwise, I would be a power forward for the Knicks. Recently, a helicopter crash at Reagan airport killed 64 people. President Trump immediately blamed DEI for this disaster while the media castigated him for doing so. The woman pilot’s information was scrubbed from social media. Later, the New York Times reported that this woman had little experience and ignored the advice of her co-pilots. Would Dr. Selinger board a plane with a DEI pilot to show solidarity with this movement? Gender affirming care involves either giving sex hormones to those who wish to change their gender or performing risky surgical procedures involving the reshaping and removing of genitalia and adding or removing breasts. Does Dr. Selinger really believe this is appropriate treatment for those under 18 years of age? Does he believe that this should be performed without parental consent as has been proposed by some Colorado legislators? Finland and England, who have a much longer history of performing gender affirming treatments for those under 18 than the United States, have essentially banned these treatments, citing long-term data that fewer patients were helped than injured. Dr. Kaltiala was one of the first psychiatrists in Finland to institute gender-affirming care. But after a decade of treating this condition and analyzing her data on its efficacy, she wrote an article with the following title: “Gender Affirming Care is Dangerous. I Know Because I Helped Pioneer It.” In her article, she states the following: I felt an increasing obligation to patients, to medicine, and to the truth, to speak outside of Finland against the widespread transitioning of gender-distressed minors. I have been particularly concerned about American medical societies, who as a group continue to assert that children know their “authentic” selves, and a child who declares a transgender identity should be affirmed and started on treatment. But on one point, I agree with Dr. Selinger: Medicaid should not be slashed for our poorest citizens. But should this unfortunately occur, I will take care of these poor patients free of charge and there is no doubt in my mind that my colleague Dr. Selinger will do the same.
